Stan Burnside

Stan Burnside (B. 1947. Nassau) is a renowned Bahamian painter. After recelving his BFA, and MFA degrees from The University of Pennsyivania, Stan returned to The Bahamas and accepted a teaching position at College of The Bahamas, now University of The Bahamas. He eventually became head of the Art Department where he remained for 11 years.

He immersed himself in Junkanoo, first as a designer with the Shell Saxon Superstars and later as a founding member/principal designer with One Family Junkanoo and Community Organization. He Is also the founder of B-CAUSE (Bahamian Creative Artists United for Serious Expression). Stan has become a folk hero here in The Bahamas over the last four decades. Utilizing elemental and mystical symbolism rooted in his heritage to explore the limitations and possibilities of the Afro-Caribbean experience, he has introduced the world of Afro-futurism to the Bahamas: Stan's pieces have always showcased his appreciation for color, and now with these recent works, he utilizes a darker pallet in order to invoke feelings of empathy, pathos and resilience in the face of adversity. These works are inspired by the past, current events, and the promise of the future. These are difficult times and the artist would like all of us to do what we can to help those who are less fortunate.

In addition to his yearly shows in The Bahamas, Burnside has exhibited widely in venues such as France, Ecuador, Bermuda, USA, Venezuela and The Dominican Republic. His work can be found in collections such as the Museum of the Americas in Washington, DC and the Museo de Arte Moderno, Santo Domingo.
